Stream Queen: The Best Offerings on Paramount+

Hello hello, and welcome back to another Stream Queen! I’ve tackled the likes of Shudder and Hulu, and now, I’m back with good ol’ Paramount+. This Stream Queen is a real buffet of classic horror, modern horror, and of course, silly movie synopses.

As always, I suggest using my list as a springboard because Paramount+ has a lot of cool and nostalgic content, including the entire Are You Afraid of the Dark? catalog. Paramount+ is also kind of cool and unique in that they have better selections of classic horror than modern horror.

Without any further adieu, I present to you, in no particular order, my list of some of the best offerings on Paramount+.*

*at the time of this writing - please don’t hate me if they’re gone for some reason

A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II: I would have to figure out a way to eat chips.

Recommended Movies: Hush (Netflix) and Don’t Breathe (FXNOW)

Recommended movies: We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and Feardotcom (Pluto TV, Prime, Tubi, and Vudu)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956): Does anyone know if the HIPPA laws are the same for pod people?

Recommended movies: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 - Prime) and The Stepford Wives (1975 - Tubi)

The Brain That Wouldn’t Die: This is a personal favorite of mine, and you HAVE to watch the MST3K on it.

Recommended movies: The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977 - Tubi and YouTube TV) and The Beast of Yucca Flats (The Roku Channel and Tubi)

A Bucket of Blood  [CW/TW: su*c*d*]: Just watch all the Roger Corman films you can.

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later: I love Jamie Lee Curtis’s arc on Dawson’s Creek.

Recommended movies: I Know What You Did Last Summer (HBO Max) and Urban Legend (HBO Max and Tubi)

Recommended movies: House on Haunted Hill (1999 - Tubi) and Thir13en Ghosts (Netflix)

The Paranormal Activity series: At a certain point, you’ll be saying, “These would be good if they weren’t tethered to the Paranormal Activity storyline.”

Recommended movies: Host (Shudder) and The Gallows

The Phantom of the Opera (1925): If you weren’t obsessed with every iteration of The Phantom of the Opera in middle school, and it wasn’t an integral part of your personality, I don’t know how to relate to you.

Recommended movies: Nosferatu (Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Shudder, Tubi, and Vudu) and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (The Roku Channel, Shudder, and Tubi)

Ritual (Modus Anomali) [CW/TW: I don’t know exactly how to label this, but there are some grisly scenes involving a pregnant woman and teens/children]: I just pop on a movie and grab a snack when I want to unwind but alright.

Recommended movies: The Rental (Netflix) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (Showtime)

The Terror (1963): Jack Nicholson walked in The Terror, so he could run in The Shining.

Recommend movies: The Beguiled (2017 - Netflix) and Next of Kin (1982 - Shudder and Tubi)

Rosemary’s Baby: Just a friendly reminder that Roman Polanski is a piece of shit, but Mia Farrow’s performance deserves to be seen.

Recommended movies: Mother! (Prime) and Prevenge (Shudder)

Scream 4: Long live Hayden Panettiere.

Recommend movies: Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon and Texas Chainsaw 3D (Netflix)

Scream (2022):  Long live Jenna Ortega.

Thinner: White people are the absolute worst.

Recommended movies: Drag Me to Hell (Hulu) and Needful Things

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976): Zodiac as a made for TV movie but in the best way.

Recommended movies: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 - Prime, Showtime, Shudder, and Tubi) and Pieces (1982 - Peacock, The Roku Channel, Shudder, and Tubi)

Screamtime: Trilogy of Terror’s second cousin.

Recommended movies: Screams of a Winter Night (Shudder) and Dead of Night (1977)

The Video Dead: Don’t touch that DIEL! (That’s the most 80s tagline I could think of.)

Recommended movies: Videodrome (Tubi) and The Deadly Spawn

Dementia 13 (1963): I bet their Thanksgiving dinners are WILD.

Recommended movies: House of Wax (1953) and Psycho (1960 - Tubi)

Tales of Terror: Vinny P does it again.

Recommended movies: House of Usher (1960) and Extraordinary Tales (Peacock, Tubi, and Vudu)

Silver Bullet: My favorite horror subgenre is “1980s Stephen King films set in 1955.”

Recommended movies: The Howling and Sleepwalkers

Saint Maud: I complain when there's a tiny pebble in my shoe, so I can’t relate.

Recommended movies: Things Seen and Heard (Netflix) and The Lodge (Hulu)

Annihilation: I just love Kiera Knightley’s work.

Recommended movies: Ex Machina (Showtime) and High Life (Showtime Anytime)

Buried Alive (I just couldn’t find this trailer to save my life): If you look up the word “romp” in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of this movie.

Recommended movies: Switchblade Sisters (Shudder) and Zombie High

Twice Told Tales: It’s like Tales of Terror but different.

Recommended movies: Horror Express (Shudder) and Ghost Stories (2017)

Comedy of Terrors: Vincent Price essentially looks into the camera like Jim Halpert for 105 minutes.

Recommended movies: Young Frankenstein (Prime) and I Sell the Dead

New Year’s Evil: I hope you’re ready for a KILLER New Year (again, it’s the most 80s tagline I could come up with given the source material).

Recommended movies: Black Christmas (honestly, all three) and My Bloody Valentine (1981)

Sleepy Hollow: I can’t watch this and not think of one, specific Disney commercial that took me over 15 minutes to find on YouTube

Recommended movies: From Hell and Crimson Peak (Netflix)

Carnival of Souls: I’d be so pissed if this was my afterlife.

Recommended movies: The Others and The Amusement Park (Shudder)

The Ring and The Ring Two: I hope to God I never have to explain to a youth what a VCR is.

Recommended movies: The Grudge (2004) and Sinister

The Moose Head Above the Mantle [CW/TW: SA, domestic violence]: I feel like this is the only one I need to explain myself on. It’s not that this movie is a cinematic masterpiece by any means, BUT the concept is very cool.

Recommended movies: Hereditary (Showtime) and The Medium (Shudder)

Scared to Death (1947): A prime example of why men shouldn’t write female characters.

Recommended movies: Knives Out and Nightmare Alley (HBO Max and Hulu)

The War of the Worlds (1953): My favorite part is the random dance scene (in all seriousness though, this movie thoroughly impresses me, given when it was made).

Recommended movies: Save Yourselves! (Hulu) and Grabbers

Dishonorable Mentions

Bitten (2008): Jay, sans Silent Bob, gets fanged.

Recommended movies: Vampire’s Kiss (Pluto TV) and Bordello of Blood

It Takes from Within: A film by Kirk.

Recommended movies: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (Shudder and Tubi) and Eraserhead (HBO Max)

*Sometimes, there are movies that aren’t quite traditional horror movies but live in the same space and are essentially cousins to the genre. I would be insane not to include these movies, so please enjoy an extra recommendation on the house.*

The Warriors: If they asked me to come out and play, I’d remind them of the time and tell them I had work in the morning.

Recommended movies: The Wanderers (Tubi) and The Outsiders (FuboTV)
