Stream Queen: The Best Offerings on Hulu
Well, I’m back at it again with another Stream Queen! If you’re just joining us, welcome! But, definitely check out the inaugural entry in this series where I talk about the best offerings on Shudder (I had a real Sophie’s Choice, but we made it). For those who are new, and to quell my own anxiety, I’m going to give another disclaimer for this series.
I didn’t include classics like Rosemary’s Baby or The Omen, nor did I include the likes of Graveyard Shift, Cujo, or Thinner for my King fiends. I try to curate my lists based off of horror movies I think deserve more attention or differ from your everyday slasher. I also try to steer away from movies I’ve already written about like Spontaneous, but you should still watch it. Please use this list as a jumping off point and dive into Hulu for yourself! The water’s fine.
Without any further adieu, I present to you, in no particular order, my list of some of the best offerings on Hulu.*
*at the time of this writing - please don’t hate me if they’re gone for some reason
Nasty Piece of Work: It’s like you grabbed Christmas Vacation and Cheap Thrills and threw them in a blender, Eve 6 style.
Recommended movies: Better Watch Out (2017 - Peacock, Shudder, Tubi, and The Roku Channel) and A Christmas Horror Story (Shudder)
My Valentine: Think Scott Pilgrim vs. the World by way of Vertigo Comics.
Recommended movies: Cam (Netflix) and The Perfection (Netflix)
Fresh: I’m calling it early - This is going to be one of my favorite horror movies of 2022. It’s hard to make a good, clean, sleek, and biting (literally) horror movie, but by god, this movie does it.
Recommended movies: It Follows (Netflix) and Ready or Not (FXNow)
Censor: If you’re anything like me, you’re going to watch this movie, not know how you feel, and wake up the next morning and realize how good it is.
Recommended movies: Berberian Sound Studio and Daniel Isn’t Real (Prime, Tubi, Prime, and The Roku Channel)
Come True: I love this movie so, so much. It embodies the idea of new wave horror, and the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE.
Recommended movies: The Void (Crackle, Philo, and Shudder) and The Guest (2014 - Showtime)
The Host (2006): Bong Joon-ho’s monster movie is so much more; it’s a commentary on the environment, grief, family, and, uh, it has a big monster.
Recommended movies: Troll Hunter (HBO Max, Pluto, and Vudu) and Monsters (2010 - HBO Max and Tubi)
Jacob’s Ladder: In my opinion, Jacob’s Ladder set the precedent for the modern, Shyamalan twist lead up and reveal.
Recommended movies: From Beyond (Pluto TV and Tubi) and Event Horizon
Let the Right One In (2008): We can all agree this is one of the best vampire movies ever made, right?
Recommended movies: Only Lovers Left Alive (HBO Max) and Byzantium (Showtime)
Little Monsters: Lupita Nyong’o reminds us why we love her, and Olaf would be ashamed of Josh Gad.
Recommended movies: Cooties (Pluto TV, Tubi, and The Roku Channel) and Anna and the Apocalypse (Pluto TV)
Sputnik: Please watch this before the remake comes out because I know we’re gonna screw it up.
Tragedy Girls: High school can be MURDER (Thanks, I’ll be here all week).
Recommended movies: Freaky (HBO Max) and Jennifer’s Body (Tubi)
Paranormal Activity 3: HEAR ME OUT - PA3 is actually my favorite in the franchise, and outside of the original, I think it’s the best.
Recommended movies: The Last Exorcism and The Ritual (Netflix)
Willy’s Wonderland: Grindhouse presents: Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Recommended movies: The Banana Splits Movie and Black Friday
Bad Hair: Justin Simien is a genius. That is all.
Recommended movies: His House (Netflix) and Attack the Block (Starz)
Books of Blood: [CW/TW: self-harm, su*c*d*, SI] I’ve watched this movie a couple of times, and it’s one of my favorite weekend late-afternoon romps to give you a different type of Sunday Scaries.
Recommended movies: Night Breed (Peacock, Pluto TV, Prime, Shudder, Tubi, and Vudu) and Gerald’s Game (Netflix)
The Lodge: Kids can be cruel…especially if you happen to be their dad’s new girlfriend who escaped and testified against a cult.
Recommended movies: It Comes at Night (Showtime) and The Endless (Shudder, Tubi, and Vudu)
I Trapped The Devil: If someone tells you they have something evil in their basement, you should probably listen.
Recommended movies: The Autopsy of Jane Doe (Shudder) and They Look Like People (The Roku Channel, Shudder, Tubi, and Vudu)
XX: I don’t have a quippy log line for this one. It’s a badass, female-directed horror anthology, and you should watch it.
Recommended movies: Teeth (Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Tubi) and Near Dark (Shudder)
Pilgrim: It’s all fun and games until “method actors” torture your family on Thanksgiving.
Recommended movies: Blood Rage (Tubi) and Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (HBO Max)
Rent-A-Pal: For the love of god, stop renting and watching sketchy video tapes.
Recommended movies: Nocturne (Prime) and Thoroughbreds
The Crazies (2010): This is another HEAR ME OUT, but I actually enjoy this remake.
Recommended movies: Mortuary (2005 - Prime and Tubi) and Rec (2007)
The Wretched: This could be one of the 8 Films to Die For if they brought back After Dark Horrorfest.
Recommended movies: Summer of 84 (Shudder) and The Visit
*Sometimes, there are movies that aren’t quite traditional horror movies but live in the same space and are essentially cousins to the genre. I would be insane not to include these movies, so please enjoy some extra recommendations on the house.*
Parasite: I can’t say anything to truly do this movie justice. Just watch it. Trust me.
Recommended movies: The Handmaiden and Mother (2009 - fuboTV)
Saint Maud: I think Rose Glass was in the same Sunday School class I was.
Recommended movies: First Reformed (Showtime) and The Babadook
Nightmare Alley: Y’all lied about Bradley Cooper’s junk in this movie.
Recommended movies: Sunset Boulevard (Pluto TV) and The Prestige (I’d also watch the original Nightmare Alley from 1947 on YouTube)
I went back and forth on including Titane because I’ll probably never watch it again. It’s like Christine, but if Artie fucked the car and went on the lam as a grieving father’s missing son. It’s ROUGH/hard to watch at times, so please read about it and watch with extreme caution… and maybe don’t watch it after the Macy’s Day Parade on Thanksgiving like I did.
Recommended movies: Neon Demon (Prime) and Stoker (HBO Max)
Greener Grass: A 90 minute Adult Swim infomercial - It’s also written and directed by badasses Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe, so run, don’t walk, to this one.
Recommended movies: Deep Murder (Crackle, fuboTV, Paramount+, and Pluto TV) and VHYes
*Dishonorable Mention*
Who is Killing the Cheerleaders?: Every so often, there comes along a movie so bad, you have to watch it. This is one of those movies.
Recommended movies: Beneath (2007 yes, the MTV one - fuboTV) and Boo (2005 - The Roku Channel) - both of which are actually better than this film
