Stream Queen: The Best Offerings of Halloween

Hello hello, and welcome back to another Stream Queen! So far, I’ve tackled the likes of Shudder, Hulu, and Paramount+, but this time, we’re shaking things up. Instead of focusing on one streaming service, I’m giving you the best offerings of Halloween. Yes friends, I’m making a version of my annual Halloween watchlist public. 😱

As always, this Stream Queen will be a creepy charcuterie of all things horror, but with the added bonus of a Coming Attractions section and an entire diatribe about The Scooby-Doo Project. I’ll also include where all of these celluloid concoctions will be lurking this season, so you don’t have to Google and/or go through every streaming service on your Roku searching like I do. I do have some bad news though ⸺ unlike a proper Stream Queen, some of these movies might not be streaming, but never fear! I’ll let you know if that’s the case, too.

Click through for previous Stream Queens covering Paramount+, Hulu, and Shudder!

Note: The only thing I’m not including here is the CBS Halloween lineup I have on VHS. If your family doesn’t have the 1985 CBS Halloween lineup recorded on VHS, store bought is fine.

Without any further adieu, I present to you, in no particular order, my list of the best offerings of Halloween.

P.S. I was going to do punny and/or cutesy names for each section, but they even made me audibly groan 🙇

Movies

The WNUF Halloween Special: ‘NUF said (Shudder and AMC+)

The Blair Witch Project: Never forget that this movie scared my sister so badly, she made me, a 7-year-old, sleep in the bed with her (she was 22), so the witch would take me first. (HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, Prime, and The Roku Channel)
Watch it with Hyperreal Film Club at Wax Myrtle’s on 10/25!

Halloween franchise: I love a strong, silent type.

The Halloween Tree: Nothing says Halloween like children fighting an old man for the soul of their friend. (Available to rent for $3.99 and up)

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark: I’m pretty sure this is exactly how people in my hometown see me when I go visit my sister. (Prime)
Watch it with Hyperreal Film Club on 10/10 at Hotel Vegas!

Trick 'r Treat: If I had a nickel for every time I rented this movie instead of just buying it, I’d have enough to buy a DVD of this movie. (Available to rent for $2.99 and up)

House on Haunted Hill (1959): My friends over at Memory Static have a delightful episode on this flick, so I’m going to shamelessly plug them instead of giving you a funny caption. (Prime, Shudder, and Tubi)

Night of the Demons (1988): Honestly, Angela’s dance is hot. (Freevee, Peacock)

Hocus Pocus: If your mom never got you a broom from Big Lots to sit on the arm of your couch so that you could pretend like you’re flying, I don’t know how to help you. (Disney+)

Casper: The older I get, the more I’d try to be Kat’s stepmom. (Peacock, Tubi)

Scream: I’ve seen this movie 20 goddamn times. (Showtime)
Watch it with Hyperreal Film Club at Hotel Vegas on 10/31!

Hell House LLC franchise: They might do everything you’re absolutely not supposed to do in a horror movie, but they’ve got spirit. Literally.

Beetlejuice: Delia Deetz is just gothic Moira Rose. (Peacock)

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Tell me you grew up with the original Hot Topic without telling me you grew up with the original Hot Topic. (Disney+)

The Craft:  I sincerely bought a Connie Francis record at Goodwill because of this movie. (Paramount+)

Practical Magic: Featuring Character Actress Margo Martindale. (HBO Max)

Halloweentown franchise: HEY CHOCOLATE BAR. (Disney+)

Don’t Look Under the Bed: I was terrified to swim in public pools because of the Jell-O scene. (Disney+)

Mom’s Got A Date With A Vampire: The Nanny is a lot different than I remembered. (Disney+)

The Worst Witch: I’m so glad someone got a green screen for Christmas in 1985. (YouTube

Addams Family Values: The rare exception to the sequel being better than the original.  (Peacock)

Poltergeist (1982): I would’ve tapped out about an hour and 45 minutes before The Freelings did. Put me OUT, Coach. (HBO Max)

Pet Sematary (1989): This one goes out to all the ones who are looking to relieve the days of watching AMC FearFest after school. (Available to rent from $3.99 and up)

Ernest Scared Stupid: Why is this movie more traumizing than it should be? (Available to rent from $2.99 and up)

Double, Double, Toil and Trouble: I can’t say anything better than the first line of the IMDb description, “On Halloween night, two precocious little girls try to save their parents from their nasty old capitalist aunt's greedy clutches.” (Available to rent from $2.99 and up)

Rocky Horror Picture Show: I don’t know when we all universally agreed this was a Halloween movie, but I’m sure glad we did. (Available to rent from $3.99 and up)

The Exorcist: I always order the Pazuzu from BJ’s. (HBO Max)

The Guest: Is it weird to say I’m horny for this movie? Because I’m horny for this movie. (Available to rent from $3.99 and up)

TV show episodes

Gravity Falls - “Summerween”: I use Grenda’s voice for my dog, Sadie, and I won’t be taking any further questions at this time.

Boy Meets World - “And Then There Was Shawn: As someone with a Mr. Feeny-inspired tattoo, did y’all really think this wouldn’t make the list? (Disney+)

WandaVision - “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!”: A newbie, but a goodie. (Disney+)

Clueless - “Trick or Treat,” “Scream, Murray, Scream (Part 1),” and “Scream Again, Murray, Scream Again! (Part 2)”: These episodes weren’t indeed a fever dream you had after falling asleep while watching The N. (YouTube)

Lizzie McGuire - “Night of the Day of the Dead: Better than the entire second half of the last season of AHS. (Disney+)

The Adventures of Pete and Pete - “Halloweenie”: This Halloween special shaped who I am as a person. (YouTube)

Buffy, the Vampire Slayer - “Fear Itself” and “Halloween”: Yes, I know there’s one in season six. No, we won’t be talking about it. (Hulu and Prime)

The Scooby-Doo Project

Neither movie or TV show, the The Scooby-Doo Project transcends genres. It’s, by far, one of the best things Cartoon Network has ever done. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, take a seat, friend.

The Scooby-Doo Project is a parody of The Blair Witch Project, and not only did Cartoon Network make a short film, but they made several bumpers that mimic press conferences and news reports about the disappearances of our beloved characters. Both the bumpers and the film itself are live on YouTube, so don’t take my word for it ⸺ watch them now and thank me later.
