EXXONXOXO SWITCH MOVIES: A playlist of full-length cinema available on YouTube
I compiled a list of full-lengths from YouTube for the homies who've canceled their subscription services. I’ve noticed lately, in the deluge of highly targeted cloud-based subscription content that my recall has weakened. Sometimes holding the aux I can’t remember which albums I love. I read the reviews and I scroll. I open tabs until my browser crashes. Sometimes I buy crazy shit just to confuse the algorithm.
So I made this list, personal and eclectic, of full-length films which I have either enjoyed and want to re-watch, or which have been on my radar for quite some time. Lists as testament to memory, it’s important to honor friends. Anyway, it’s a solid gathering of arthouse, some docs, some curios—all available for free for now on YouTube.
YouTube feels like the European airport of media platforms. You’re still gouged and funneled, but there’s more sense of freedom. YouTube is still, for the time being, less regulated and more redolent of the old web. Type in anything form “birds in slow motion” to “brushcutters” and you can discover a whole community and language. You can stumble upon inspiration here in a way you cannot in the other terminals. God bless it. But please keep it hush hush and fun, like the internet before the algorithm.
A full playlist of films can be found here. Below find some of my recommendations:
O DRAKOS
“The Greek Casablanca” a fantastic moody homoerotic noir that I’ve ONLY been able to find in full w Eng sub on Youtube. AFS, please screen this.
A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
Gena Rowlands gives the best performance in cinema.
WAKE IN FRIGHT
Australian New Wave feature from ’71 that captures the fever of booze sickness like nothing outside of Rene Daumal’s “A Night of Serious Drinking.” Maybe this ain’t a great sell, but the flick is haunting.
F FOR FAKE
Orson Welles at his most hammy. It’s hilarious and overblown. You laugh with this movie and feel better like when you get the flu and binge-watch Frasier.
THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL
Watch it now before all content of its ilk is scrubbed & it’s revealed that Disney+ was a psy-op for Bob Iger’s presidential campaign. Actually, it’s fun to put on in the background. The musical interludes are psychedelic, and the animated portion reminds me of Ralph Bakshi.
HYPERNORMALISATION
Also recommend anything by Adam Curtis.
