This Week in Screenings 7/14-7/20

Friday 7/14

RAGING BULL | Austin Film Society

In case you missed it at the Paramount.

Jaws | Blue Starlight Downtown

If you’ve always been too scared to watch Jaws you can now see it on the roof of a building completely safe from all shark attacks.

Interstellar | Alamo Drafthouse

I think this might be physicists favorite movie.

VASE DE NOCES | Austin Film Society

Part of the Lates series.

I’m willing to bet that during the intro, programmer Jazmyne Moreno will bring into question the morals of those in attendance.

Saturday 7/15

Heavy Trip | Blue Starlite Downtown

Each ticket comes with a box of Nordic treats from The Fika Table.

Also this movie looks good.

Reign of Fire | Blue Starlite Downtown

I don’t remember the dragons but I remember how super ripped Christian Bale was in this. Two years later loses it all for The Machinist. That man will destroy his body for a role.

Friday the 13th | Blue Starlite Downtown

So the website doesn’t confirm it but I’m pretty sure this is the 2009 version. I think that’s Jared Padalecki in the background.

PUMPING IRON II: THE WOMEN | Austin Film Society

Part of the Queer Cinema Lost and Found Series.

You don’t need to see the first one.

Editor’s note: But you should, it’s hilarious.

I’ve been assured Pumping Iron II is where it’s at.

Sunday 7/16

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial | Paramount Theatre

Steven Spielberg alien movie.

SHREK 2 | Galaxy Theatre

The best Shrek?

Frances Ha | Alamo Drafthouse

Part of the mini Greta Gerwig series at Alamo

Small Soldiers | Alamo Drafthouse

This is the last Joe Dante movie I really loved. I’d be interested to see how it holds up as an adult.

National Lampoon's Vacation | Cinemark

40th anniversary screening.

Face/Off | Paramount Theatre

Presented by Hyperreal Film Club

Truly a classic. Not a day goes by that I don’t quote this movie.

Oklahoma! Starring Hugh Jackman | Cinemark | Regal

Celebrate our neighbors to the north.

Monday 7/17

Tenet | Alamo Drafthouse

A chance to see this on a big screen.

I saw it streaming and I don’t know if that’s the best way to see it.

A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY at HOTEL VEGAS — Hyperreal Film Club

In a bar with the Hyperreal crowd and an intermission is the only way anyone should ever see this movie.

Tuesday 7/18

8 1/2 | Paramount Theatre

One of those movies that you should see if you haven’t. I always think about what an impression the Saraghina scene must have made on John Waters. His first short came out the following year.

MODESTY AND SHAME and NO SEX LAST NIGHT | Austin Film Society

Part of the ESSENTIAL CINEMA: YOU'RE MY GREATEST TREASURE: 10 EXERCISES IN INTIMACY series.

The reason I love the Austin movie screening scene is because we get to see stuff that you would not likely get to see anywhere else. This series is an example of that.

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth | Alamo Drafthouse

Part of the Terror Tuesday series.

I’ve heard this is when the Hellraiser movies got bad. But even a bad horror movie is fun with the Terror Tuesday crowd.

Wednesday 7/19

Touki bouki | Paramount Theatre

When it comes to classic movies there are known knowns, there are known unknowns, and there are unknown unknowns.

This for me was the latter.

WINNEBAGO MAN: Jack Rebney Tribute Screening | Austin Film Society

Documentary about that guy that curses a lot in what I think was the first viral video I ever saw.

RIP to a legend.

Danceploitation Masterclass | Alamo Drafthouse

Part of the Weird Wednesday series.

They won’t tell us the name of the movie so I’m sure it’s gonna be an interesting night.

Thursday 7/20

Bicycle Thieves | Paramount Theatre

There are different spheres of people that agree on the best movie in existence. One of those spheres of people probably think it’s The Shawshank Redemption. Another would probably say it’s this.
