FEMINIST HORROR WEEK NIGHT THREE: IT’S TAKING ROOT

The vitals:
7:00 ~ Doors

7:30 ~ Shorts program by Ana Armengod, award-winning experimental filmmaker and media artist. Work spans the US. ASOF could fly her in for an in-person collaboration and post-screening conversation.

Followed by: HUESERA: THE BONE WOMAN in collaboration with Cinema de la Cultura

A pregnant furniture maker spirals into terror as domestic expectations, buried desire, and supernatural visitations begin collapsing her marriage, identity, and sense of bodily control.

What does it mean to belong somewhere? What happens when the place you come from, the place you live, and the person you are no longer fit neatly together?

It’s Taking Root explores identity, belonging, displacement, and the body through a collection of experimental shorts by Mexican multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Ana Armengod, followed by Michelle Garza Cervera’s Huesera: The Bone Woman. In Huesera, a pregnant furniture maker begins to unravel as domestic expectations, buried desire, and supernatural forces collide, forcing her to confront the life she has been expected to build.

The evening will include a conversation between Faiza Kracheni and Ana Armengod about her practice and the work presented. Armengod’s multidisciplinary practice moves between film, illustration, writing, sculpture, installation, and sound, often turning her attention toward nature, death, memory, and the details that disappear within larger stories. As she described during her 2024 MacDowell Residency, “I’m an avant-garde filmmaker; when thinking of art that speaks about immigration, folks tend to think of bright, colorful banners with monarch butterflies, which are meant to inspire us to break these borders and be free. That is not me.”

All drink proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Refugee Collective, a collective of refugee women building livelihoods through textile work and their farm in Elgin, Texas. Funds raised will support the replacement of a refrigerator at their farm, helping sustain the collective’s work and community.

Join Faiza Kracheni and Ana Armengod for Night Three of Feminist Horror Week as the INVASIVE SPECIES 2 invasion takes root.
