Four experimental films about life, death, desire, and what the body knows. The evening brings together foundational works by Maya Deren and Barbara Hammer with contemporary work by Austin filmmakers Emily Basma, Faiza Kracheni, and Ana Arregod. Together, these films explore the body at its thresholds: dreaming and waking, illness and survival, life and death, agency and surrender.

Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon follows a woman returning home who falls asleep and enters a vivid dream where repetition, shifting perspectives, and fractured time and space blur the boundaries between reality and desire.

Barbara Hammer's A Horse Is Not a Metaphor was made while Hammer was undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. A radically queer foundational figure in experimental film, Hammer turns her experience of illness and remission into an intimate meditation on the body, mortality, healing, and survival.

Emily Basma's Seeds offers a new take on the story of Persephone, giving her the autonomy to decide her own fate. Rather than being kidnapped and taken to the underworld, Persephone makes the decision herself. Filmed on 16mm Ektachrome, Basma's vision turns a familiar myth on its head while exploring the female gaze, agency, and the artifice of storytelling.

Faiza Kracheni's If I Die, a new Super 8 work, will premiere as part of the program in addition to Ana Armengod's Se Prendió Candela, a Super 8 film and installation shot in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Following the screening, join us for a free Women in Arts Community Mixer for women, femme, and nonbinary artists, filmmakers, arts workers, organizers, educators, and community members. Representatives from participating Austin arts organizations, including Austin School of Film, will be on hand to share their work, resources, and opportunities for getting involved. The evening will include informal networking, conversation, and opportunities to connect with others across Austin's arts community. Let’s keep this invasion going! Join us for Night Four of Feminist Horror Week as the INVASIVE SPECIES 2 invasion moves through the body, memory, desire, and transformation.
