This Week in Screenings 8/25-8/31
Friday 8/25
The Iron Giant | Alamo Drafthouse
It’s like Spielberg nostalgia but animated.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | Alamo Drafthouse
Is this the one with Robert Pattinson?
Editor’s note: yes.
You don’t wanna be the person who hasn’t seen Persona cause you’ll be so embarrassed when it comes up in conversation and you have to nod and smile like you know what people are talking about.
Wet Hot American Summer | Alamo Drafthouse
I’ve never disagreed with Roger Ebert more than I do with this movie.
Saturday 8/26
Rear Window | Paramount Theatre
So many movies copied this premise.
When I saw the trailer I thought this was Romero’s The Crazies.
But at only two and a half hours this is a short movie for Béla Tarr.
Sunday 8/27
D.E.B.S. Brunch | Alamo Drafthouse
I saw this at a film festival in Dallas a long time ago and remember really enjoying it.
I don’t remember anything else I saw at that fest.
CARMEN JONES | Austin Film Society
Otto Preminger’s version of the opera Carmen starring Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte.
They are both really great in this.
This is the second feature film by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Apparently the first film was a remake of Solaris while still in college).
This is the director of Drive My Car and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy.
Sans Soleil | Paramount Theatre
Presented by Hyperreal Film Club.
From the director of La Jetée.
It would be a cool experience to see this in a theater.
Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars.
TAXI ZUM KLO | Austin Film Society
Part of the Queer Cinema Lost and Found series.
A more realistic depiction of gay culture than Weekend IMO.
I’m looking forward to the short Bros Before as well.
Monday 8/28
Arise, wretched Chickens of the earth.
Arise, convicts of hunger.
The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie | Alamo Drafthouse
Gotta see as much classic Troma Toxie as you can before the new movie comes out.
Tears of the Black Tiger | Hotel Vegas
Presented by Hyperreal Film Club.
Described as a Thai Melodrama Western.
I’m sold.
Tuesday 8/29
Cool movie about Mozart.
Also known as Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.
Emma Thompson adapted this children’s book.
Spirited Away (English Dubbed) | Cinemark | Regal
This played Alamo last week but if you missed it you got another chance.
AGFA Horrifying Mystery Movie Week 5 | Alamo Drafthouse
Part of the Terror Tuesday series.
OK so surely this one is Troll 2.
Wednesday 8/30
Barry Lyndon | Paramount Theatre
I always hear about the technical aspects of this movie but the story is wild too.
I was a big Kenan and Kel guy.
I do think this is a better movie than Clerks 2.
Slotherhouse | Cinemark | Alamo Drafthouse | Galaxy | AMC
Yet another joke horror movie.
Could be fun.
It’s sure playing a lot of places.
Early George Lucas movie and inspiration for Happy Days.
AGFA Weirdo Mystery Movie Week 5 | Alamo Drafthouse
Part of the Weird Wednesday series.
I really hope this is The Astrologer cause I love that movie.
Thursday 8/31
The Breakfast Club | Blue Starlite
New Location 500 VFW Rd
2001: A Space Odyssey | Paramount Theatre
Another movie that works so much better on a big screen.
If you missed this or Barry Lyndon at the Paramount.
Alamo Drafthouse is doing a Kubrick series soon.
I’m gay and I watch a lot of movies
