This Week in Screenings 6/9-6/15
Friday 6/9
Hyperreal Film Club brings us this 35th Anniversary screening.
Sometimes I forget that Giancarlo Esposito didn’t always play Gustavo Fring types.
ON THE WATERFRONT | Austin Film Society
You should see this if you haven’t so you can say “I could have been a contender.”
This is part of the series of movies that inspired the new Wes Anderson. I'm curious to see the connection.
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND [DIRECTOR'S CUT] | Austin Film Society
Also part of that movies that inspired Asteroid City. This one’s a little more of a clear connection.
Saturday 6/10
Tommy Pickles gets a new baby brother.
45th Anniversary. The cast is insane.
Does he win in this one? I can’t remember.
Presented by Robert Rodriguez.
THE MISFITS | Austin Film Society
Marilyn Monroe’s last movie. I remember hearing about it in the You Must Remember This… Podcast. Glad I get to see it in a theater now.
Sunday 6/11
Special screening for the 35th Anniversary.
This is the one with Debbie Harry and Divine not the one with John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The Terminator | Paramount Theatre
Co hosted with We Luv Video
A small series warning about the dangers of AI.
This is a Brunch screening. They really missed an opportunity to serve Falafel and Baba Ganoush.
Kiki’s Delivery Service | Violet Crown Cinemark Regal
A lot of Ghibli movies are screening all year. Smart move cause they are a lot of fun to see in a theater.
Hold on tight spidermonkey, I heard they are rebooting this series as a TV show?
Monday 6/12
James Baldwin Abroad: A Program of 3 Films | Austin Film Society
Three short films following James Baldwin. I always enjoy hearing him speak.
The Secret World of Arrietty (Dubbed) | Alamo Drafthouse
This is only showing Monday both dubbed and subtitles options. I’m gonna miss it so I’m hoping it plays again soon. I’d like to be a The Borrowers movies completist.
Hyperreal Film Club presents.
It’s John Woo and the poster has a cop holding a baby. This is gonna be a good time.
Tuesday 6/13
Dirty Dancing Movie Party | Alamo Drafthouse
Screening comes with themed props and folks are encouraged to quote along and sing and stuff.
THE LITTLE RASCALS | Galaxy Theatres
Yikes. I don’t know maybe it’s OK?
F for Fake | Paramount Theatre
This was so ahead of its time in terms of how movies are self-referential now.
5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND | Austin Film Society
Part of the series of early works by Makoto Shinkai.
Part of the Doll Parts: 70 Years of Trans Cinema series
Doc about Tans women living in Madrid. This whole series looks really good.
Creepers (aka Phenomena) | Alamo Drafthouse
My personal favorite Dario Argento movie. It has everything.
The Babadook | Alamo Drafthouse
Happy Pride Month!
Wednesday 6/14
Pan's Labyrinth | Paramount Theatre
I kinda feel about this movie how I do about things I saw as a kid. Even though I saw this first as an adult.
Altman doesn’t just do large ensemble movies. Sometimes it’s just three women.
.com for Murder | Alamo Drafthouse
Part of the Weird Wednesday Series
Homage to Hitchcock but with computers
Thursday 6/15
Beauty and the Beast | Paramount Theatre
Jean Cocteau movies are all like poetry. This is the best version of this story other than the original Disney one but even that version references this movie.
EMANUELLE IN AMERICA | Austin Film Society
Will be preceded by a Liz Purchell short The Naked Eye: Sex and the Mondo Film.
There will be a very impressive panel to discuss the Emmanuel series.
I’m very excited to see this.
I’m gay and I watch a lot of movies
