This Week in Screenings 6/16-6/22

Presented by Hyperreal Film Club.

This was the first time I heard the C word.

The Lost Boys | Blue Starlite Drive-in Downtown

Joel Schumacher isn’t my favorite director but this movie is a lot of fun.

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS | RUSHMORE | BOTTLE ROCKET | Austin Film Society

In anticipation of the new movie you can see three of the first Wes Anderson movies.

SAILOR SUIT AND MACHINE GUN | Austin Film Society

Highschool girl become a yakuza boss.

Part of the lates series.

Saturday 6/17

The Witches | Paramount Theatre

I saw this in a hotel as a kid and really wanted a pet mouse.

The Royal Tenenbaums | Paramount

It’s always fun to see a movie at the Paramount. This movie kind of lends itself to that old theater feel.

THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU | Austin Film Society

Part of the first four series in anticipation of the new Wes Anderson movie coming out Thursday.

THE DEVIL QUEEN | Austin Film Society

Brazilian gangster movie.

Part of the Queer Cinema Lost and Found Series.

The Sandlot | Blue Starlite Downtown

Your car is kinda like your own sandlot in a way.

Sunday 6/18

The Maltese Falcon | Double feature with Treasure of the Sierra Madre | Paramount Theatre

I’ve always wanted a theater that goes back to the old model of looping a few features and shorts. So you leave at the part when you came in. This isn’t that, but if you buy a ticket to the first movie you’re allowed in for the second too.

Bull Durham Brunch | Alamo Drafthouse

I saw this on TV at a bar recently. Tim Robbins is so young and Susan Sarandon is so hot.

BACK TO THE FUTURE | Galaxy Theatres

Part of the repertory $5 screening series they’ve been doing.

Monday 6/19

Monday Mystery Movie | Regal

They are going to show a PG rated movie for $5.

Wonder what it is.

I’ll probably never know.

MISS JUNETEENTH | Austin Film Society

Special encore screening on the holiday.

Do The Right Thing | Alamo Drafthouse

One of those movies you should see if you haven’t.

The Birdcage | Alamo Drafthouse

Robin Williams was a good guy. RIP.

There Will Be Blood | Alamo Drafthouse

They showed this a while back I think? I can’t keep up. It’s a good movie and better on a big screen.

Night of the Comet | Hotel Vegas

Hyperreal Film Club presents.

It’s got zombies and a mall in the ‘80s so I love it.

Tuesday 6/20

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU | Galaxy Theatres | Regal Theaters

Also playing at Cinemark Monday 6/19

CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES | Austin Film Society

Part of the Makoto Shinkai early works series.

Bound | Paramount Theatre

Presented by Hyperreal Film Club.

Wachowskis directorial debut. They hit the ground running.

Glen or Glenda | Alamo Drafthouse

Part of the Doll Parts: 70 Years of Trans Cinema series.

So glad I have the opportunity to see this in a theater. I also love how people came around on Ed Wood and see the value not just the mistakes.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday | Alamo Drafthouse

Part of the Terror Tuesday series.

This is the final one, right?

Wednesday 6/21

Hedwig and the Angry Inch | Paramount Theatre

John Cameron Mitchell has such iconic hair now. Same style no matter what he’s in. He played a parrot in Yellowjackets and still had that hair.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm | Alamo Drafthouse

Mark Hamill is the best Joker.

Lala Land.. Oh No, Wait its Moonlight | Alamo Drafthouse

Innerspace | Alamo Drafthouse

Part of the Weird Wednesday series.

Joe Dante comedic take on Fantastic Voyage. In my opinion he’s best when referencing movies he probably saw as a kid

Bottle Rocket | Violet Crown

If you missed it at AFS go see it here. They have good cocktails too.

Heavyweights | Blue Starlite Downtown

It’s playing downtown for those who just won’t drive to Mueller.

2023 Austin Asian American Film Festival Day 1 | Austin Film Society

Runs through Sunday the 25th.

Thursday 6/22

Twister | Blue Starlite Mueller

I remember reading a story about a drive-in that was hit by a tornado while this was playing.
