This Week in Screenings 4/21-4/27
Friday 4/21
I thought this would be boring but it wasn’t at all. That’s usually how Andrei Tarkovsky goes for me.
Directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska who also directed The Lure. Really interesting visually and thematically
Part of the Lates series
If anyone ever asks me for a movie recommendation I start with this one.
No Car needed with Fog.
Saturday 4/22
The Thing (1982) | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
John Carpenter had such a great run of movies with Kurt Russell.
Carol Burnett A Celebration | Regal
I’m so curious about what this is gonna be like. Love Carol Burnett though.
Sunday 4/23
Spirited Away: Live on Stage | Regal | Cinemark | Violet Crown
Recorded in 2022 in Tokyo a stage adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki’s animated movie screening 4/23, 4/25, 4/27 and 5/2
I’m very intrigued.
Death Becomes Her | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
Very relatable movie about aging
One of the better Mel Brooks comedies. Also the seats at the Galaxy Highland are nice.
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
A lot of these are gonna be playing to get folks ready for FFX.
From Russia with Love | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
A problematic Bond movie with a queer villain. Aren’t they all kinda problematic though.
Monday 4/24
History Of Television: International Day Of Rockford | Austin Film Society
These TV presentations are always fun and informative.
The Devil's Backbone | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
Spooky Guillermo del Toro movie. I once heard this was part of his unfinished Spanish Civil war trilogy with Pan’s Labyrinth. Don’t quote me though.
This looks really good and I particularly find Anna Fabrega hilarious.
Tuesday 4/25
Psycho (1998) | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
Gus Van Sant’s shot by shot remake.
Part of the Terror Tuesday Series.
Final movie in the Kelly Reichardt series. Environmental activists blowing up a hydroelectric dam. Very much in the zeitgeist.
Wednesday 4/26
Action Jackson | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
Carl Weathers Action Comedy. I feel all you need is the title.
Part of the Weird Wednesday Series.
As mentioned in the You Must Remember This… Erotic ‘80s season.
Thursday 4/27
A lot of stuff previously mentioned is showing but also a lot of new stuff. I’m looking forward to seeing Sisu.
And Congratulations to Ziah for the 100th published piece as editor!
Honored to be part of it.
I’m gay and I watch a lot of movies
