Part of our Hispanic Heritage Month series co-presented with Cine Las Americas.
After spending several years in the comedy scene, Julio Torres exploded onto small screens in 2019 with his comedy special My Favorite Shapes and the HBO series Los Espookys, both signaling a new creative voice to watch. In 2024 he pulled another one-two punch with another HBO series, Fantasmas, and his feature debut, Problemista. In his big-screen debut, El Salvador-born Torres sharpens the surrealist humor of his TV work as writer, director, and star.
With some clear parallels to his personal life, Torres plays Alejandro, a Salvadorian immigrant in New York who dreams of designing toys for Hasbro (they do not love his idea of Cabbage Patch Kids with smartphones). To keep his work visa, he finds himself employed by temperamental artist Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), leaving Alejandro stuck navigating between her unpredictable nature and rigid immigration laws while he pursues his American Dream of making toys that are about more than just fun. Also featuring RZA and Past Lives’ Greta Lee, this A24 release is an unforgettable debut from a brilliant and fresh mind in a comedy scene that needs it. —Jackie Stargrove
