It’s the era of Millennial Twee: where the clothes were ugly and Michael Cera was the epitome of sex appeal. Seriously, in a four-year-span, he starred in Juno, Super Bad, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Youth in Revolt, and Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. He was a very big deal and was a very big heartthrob.

Personally, I was one of the many teens who thought he was wonderful — mostly because of how approachable he seemed. There was an attitude at the time that life was approachable and anything was possible. This was a world where Cera could end up with an absolute smokeshow like Kat Dennings, who rocketed into being an indie darling after this film’s release. 

Taking place over the course of a single evening, Nick (Cera) and Nora (Dennings) share music, heartache, and passion in a way that predicted the optimism of the Obama years. Driven by a charming indie-folk soundtrack and the hope of what one glorious night can bring, Nick and Nora is the romantic comedy I needed at 16 and that I might still need today.
