Nearly any entry in her filmography has a fair shot at being Agnes Varda's best movie (and one of the best movies period), but Vagabond still represents a high point from an artist who never stopped innovating. In a quasi-documentary style, the film opens with the death of Mona, a transient wanderer that no one seems to know. As the movie flashes back through the last few weeks of her life, different people tell the camera who she was and what she was, placing their own expectations and assumptions on this mysterious girl. Varda shoots the film with an unjudgemental lens and a frankness that forces the audience to question their own assumptions and how much their own life experience impacts how they view Mona.
