The vitals:
7:00 ~ Doors
7:30 ~ Freaks Only: ANGUISH
Part of our Hispanic Heritage Month series co-presented with Cine Las Americas.
1987 was the era of ANGUISH, Spanish director Bigas Luna’s subversive slasher which turned the too-stuffed subgenre entirely on its head. Pulling cues from PSYCHO among others, the film follows neurotic optometrist John Pressman (Michael Lerner!) as he dodges the malign, murderous influence of his mother; a career-creepiest and very game Zelda Rubinstein. John can only resist for so long however, and what happens next violently shatters limits between the observer and the observed.
Though one of Luna’s most popular films, the atmospheric and unhinged ANGUISH is still shamefully unknown; proving the rare work which manages to have its cake and eat it too. Though the hypnotic imagery of snails and spirals will imprint on your brain, Luna’s ambitious self-reflexivity and understanding of what makes horror tick are what stick the landing. To say more would spoil the experience – see it to believe it. —Morgan Hyde
