The vitals:
7:00 ~ Doors
7:30 ~ Not Your Belly Dancer: CARAMEL
On the surface, it’s a comedy about five friends who work in a hair salon. But for her first film, it was important Nadine Labaki to show Lebanon how it actually is: complex, full of life, and not just destitute and war-torn.
Caramel reminds outside audiences that people still have to live their lives day by day while political tensions are high, and the film has become a source of pride for the Lebanese people. It shows the city as a thriving metropolitan area where women have to confront aging, infidelity, queer relationships, religious norms, and familial bonds.
