Jafar Panahi, one of Iran’s great filmmakers and one of the regime’s most persistent creative opponents presents an incisive, humanistic, and at times surprisingly funny revenge thriller. When a chance encounter introduces reserved mechanic Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri) to a man (Ebrahim Azizi) who might be Eghbal, Vahid’s torturer during his time imprisoned by the regime, Vahid seizes the chance for payback. But Vahid is neither a professional kidnapper nor a sadist. There’s a chance he’s wrong, and he doesn’t want to become another Eghbal. So, he seeks out his fellow survivors, in the hopes that they’ll be able to confirm whether the man locked up in his van’s toolbox is the man who ruined his life. And if he is? Vahid isn’t there yet.
Made semi-covertly, in some cases with false scripts and dummy hard drives on hand in case of interception, It Was Just an Accident is as carefully crafted as it was produced. The result is unforgettable.
