Can a graph and some statistics be a movie? Well, as anyone who's followed the utterly unique Jon Bois and his Dorktown cohorts know, the answer is yes. This MUBI-spotlighted filmmaker is making projects that are truly unlike anything you've ever seen. Whether it's a genre-breaking speculative fiction of what football might look like in 15,000 years (after nanotechnology makes everyone immortal and invulenerable) or a statistical analysis of how good Barry Bonds might be if he literally did not have a bat to hit with (shockingly good, it turns out), Bois breaks what seems to be ironclad rules of filmmaking to create something truly new. (LINE BREAK).
We'll be playing a double feature of two of my favorite of his projects: Section 1, a thiller using google maps, graphs, and charts to explore maybe the only time in history that a fatal tragedy was avoided thanks to one football team's sheer inability to play well, and The Bob Emergency: A history of athletes named "Bob" in professional sports. Even for people who hate sports, stats, and people named Bob, Bois will convert you to at least understanding why people would care about all of the above.
