Part of our SUMMER CAMP series!
Few properties have seen as many iterations as The Addams Family, and rarely with as much overall success. 1991’s The Addams Family was an absolute phenomenon (do yourself a favor and see the version with the restored Mamushka musical sequence), marketed via tons of different video games, a legendary pinball table, and even an MC Hammer song hitting the charts. With Addams fever everywhere, 1993’s Addams Family Values was only a matter of time, reuniting what many consider to be the definitive version of Charles Addams’ legendary characters with the original film’s director, Barry Sonnenfeld.
Gomez and Morticia (Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston at their most iconic) have welcomed baby Pubert Addams to the family, and they hire nanny Debbie Jellinsky (Joan Cusack), who unbeknownst to them, goes from family to family preying on rich bachelors to absorb their fortunes, and her sights are set on Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd). Meanwhile, kids Wednesday and Pugsley (Christina Ricci and Jimmy Workman) find themselves raising hell at a Summer camp (oh!) filled with bright-eyed normies. Hijinks ensue and theater kids will love Wednesday and Pugsley’s destruction of the camp’s play, not to mention all the appearances from names like Christine Baranski, Nathan Lane, and David Hyde Pierce. The rare sequel that may be superior to the first, whether this is your first or fiftieth time seeing Addams Family Values, you owe it to yourself to view it one more time. Do it for Raul Julia! —Jackie Stargrove
