Part of our SUMMER CAMP series!
Few films are as truly untouchable as Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a stark and gritty document of utter madness burned forever into the retinas of any viewer who experiences it. While it would be insane to suggest that anything is better than that original movie, I will say that I have a soft spot for the absolute madness of Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, now complete with the proper compound word in the title. While still packed with screams and saw noises, this movie takes the Sawyer family into zanier territory, and in my opinion it’s all the better for it.
Over a decade later, Leatherface and his psychotic clan are back and the 80s are in full swing. Their movie’s poster looks like a John Hughes flick, business is on their mind, and business is booming. The Sawyers have their eye on a local radio DJ named Stretch (Caroline Williams), while a former Texas Ranger and uncle of the Hardesty family from the original film, Lefty Enright (an utterly mad Dennis Hopper) is ready to raise hell to bring the family down with some saws of his own. Underappreciated in its day, TCM2 is a beautiful collision of Hooper at his maddest, the insanity of the Cannon Group, and pure, unfiltered 80s excess. Loud, funny, gory, and bold, the movie comes out swinging with a one-two punch of Tom Savini effects and Oingo Boingo on the soundtrack and it doesn’t let up until the end credits hit. Any self-respecting Texan owes this movie another shot on a big screen with cranked audio, and luckily all you have to do to get that experience is buy a ticket and join us. —Jackie Stargrove
