CRUEL JAWS 🛥️🦈💥
When it comes to wacked-out genre films, Italy might well take the worldwide cake. In 1995, notorious schlockmaster Bruno Mattei (responsible for ALIENS rip SHOCKING DARK and PREDATOR rip ROBOWAR, among others) tried his hand at another sequel to the classic great white thriller: a film known as JAWS 5 (no relation) or more commonly, CRUEL JAWS (still no relation). This direct-to-video headwound debuted to relative obscurity, in no small part thanks to its shameless repurposing of footage from countless other shark films. But imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say, and the hysterical masterpiece of CRUEL JAWS forces us to confront why supposed auteur Steven Speilberg never cast a Hulk Hogan lookalike, or never revealed his shark was “trained by the Navy,” or never had his characters threaten to kick each other in the balls every five minutes. This is the side-splitting, cartoon king of all rip-offs – you’re gonna need a bigger bucket of popcorn.
