Sometimes a work of art is so impossibly of a moment that you wonder if it self-generated as some sort of collective hallucination; formed from the ether by society’s unconscious desperation to categorize all its obsessions and aesthetic indicators into one digestible form. HARD TICKET TO HAWAII, the cult classic by director/writer Andy Sidaris, is one such movie. Released in 1987 amid the age of MIAMI VICE and VIEW TO A KILL, this tale of bleached-blonde cargo-flying babes cracking down on a drug bust feels so absurd, so over-the-top it barely seems possible – and yet there it is, razor disc frisbees and killer snakes and bespoke theme song and all. But while many meathead ‘80s actioners are destined for the straightest of straight boys, this sunkissed slice of camp feels refreshingly femme; thanks in no small part to the knowing performances of leading ladies Dona Speir and Hope Marie Carlton. Is it too late to claim this one for the girls? We don’t think so. Come kick back with cinema’s best take-charge babes and muscled-up himbos – it may not be paradise all the time, but it can be for 96 unfaltering minutes.
