Before the Wicked book, musical, or two-part blockbuster extravaganza, THE WIZ (1978) paved the yellow brick road for gritty Wizard of Oz adaptations. This Motown-produced all-Black movie musical is dripping with talent from the likes of Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, and more. The story of Oz is reimagined in 1970s Queens, New York, complete with sweatshops, numbers runners, haunted subway stations, and a Scarecrow (pre-solo career Michael Jackson) made of garbage. If you’re sitting around twiddling your thumbs waiting for Cynthia and Ariana to hit For Good and make you cry in public, come ease on down the road with Hyperreal instead!
