The vitals:
7:00 ~ Doors
7:30 ~ Sex, Lies, and Videotape
Honesty and intimacy can be hard to replicate on screen, let alone in someone’s first film. With sex, lies, and videotape, Steven Soderbergh made a film that’s more intimate and compelling than you'd expect. An unfulfilled wife (Andie Macdowell), her oafish husband (Peter Gallagher), and the sister who’s having an affair with him (Laura San Giacomo) lead seemingly normal, yet satisfying lives. When a guest (James Spader) comes into town for a visit, their lives are cracked open, with everyone is forced to confront their relationships to sex, intimacy, and themselves head-on. An oddly calming and non-judgemental film, Soderbergh gets great performances out of everyone, but Spader, Macdowell, and San Giacomo keep you watching. An open rumination on human sexuality and neurosis, sex, lies, and videotape is a film that pulls you in and holds you close.
