DISCOVERY ZONE: Every Monday. Underseen films we think you’ll love.
A young sociopath gets conscripted by some loser yakuza to perform a hit, only to realize that a kid with a knife isn’t necessarily a safe business partner.
Also called Tokyo Rampage (the director thought it might get more attention with the other title), the film follows petty gangsters, skateboarding dreamers, and a kid with a knife and the empty heart to use it. With plenty of similarities to Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s work (particularly Bright Future) and one of my all-time faves (that I played last year) The Man Who Stole the Sun, Pornostar is a special blend of nihilism, black humor, and moments of gentle serenity that will stick with you for years. —Ziah Grace
