A fairy tale about depression.
Why sit at home depressed and alone when you can sit in a theater with your friends and mourn or rejoice in the end of the world together?
Lars Von Trier, a filmmaker who wants you to feel bad, tells the story of two sisters reacting oppositely to the end of the world. Justine–perhaps Kirsten Dunst’s greatest performance–is depressed and apathetic about the world’s destruction. Claire, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, is frantic and anxious about the planet’s impending doom. This film is tragic, funny, visually stunning, and is one of the best portraits of depression ever created. Add in the gorgeous Tristan and Isolde soundtrack and Melancholia unfortunately feels timely as ever. —Cindy Popp
