Fresh off his iconic Oscar-winning turn in Training Day, Denzel Washington turns the shady-cop-in-over-his-head dial to eleven in this twisty 2003 thriller—his second collaboration with neo-noir maestro Carl Franklin (One False Move, Devil in a Blue Dress). This time he’s a small-town Florida Keys sheriff who finds himself trapped between the truth, the DEA, and his estranged detective wife, when his plan to fund his new mistress’s cancer treatment with impounded drug money literally goes up in flames. With a script partly inspired by the 1948’s The Big Clock, Out of Time is a wryly directed, delightfully bonkers ode to “those overplotted 1940s crime movies where the hero’s dilemma is so baffling that it seems impossible for him to escape” (Roger Ebert, 2003). Letting the thick-aired Florida day-night cycle take center stage, Franklin—alongside Blade cinematographer Theo Van Sande—guides proceedings with his trademark scenic ease, surrounding Mr. Washington with a sultry, assured cast (Sanaa Lathan, Training Day alum Eva Mendes, John Billingsley, and a devilishly goateed Dean Cain) and stepping aside to let the main man do his thing. There’s no Denzel like a desperate Denzel.
