The vitals:
7:00 ~ Doors
7:30 ~ ECHOTONE presented by Director Nathaniel Christ
Austin’s live-music ecosystem during a period of rapid development and rising costs.
Echotone is a portrait of Austin’s live-music industry as the city began to change under the weight of development and rising costs. Filmed in 2009–10, as the first high-rise condos appeared downtown, the documentary follows artists, venues, and industry workers trying to sustain creative lives amid shifting economic and cultural realities. Rather than looking back nostalgically, the film stays close to the ground, documenting how those changes reshaped the day-to-day realities of working in a music city. Praised by the Village Voice as “too vital for elegy,” and named a New York Times Critics’ Pick, Echotone captures a version of Austin whose tensions still feel urgently familiar. —Nathaniel Christ
