[Editor's note: Check out this review from Variety and tell me you 1) don’t think this sounds 100% amazing and 2) don’t want to deliver a hard poke to the eye of The Man. Particularly LOL @ tone-deaf, nationalistic “said to have a cult following.” This is gonna be great.]
“Sporadically amusing chopsocky spoof “The Adventures of Iron Pussy” at least has one thing your average camp Thai transgender comedy ain’t got: singing and dancing cameos from Thailand’s former prime minister and health minister (pointed out, but unnamed in subtitles). Apart from this novelty and the striking title, co-helmed pic by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (“Blissfully Yours”) and star Michael Shaowanasai adds up to less than the sum of its parts. Lacking the production values of Thai pics like Wisit Sasanatieng’s “Tears of the Black Tiger,” “Pussy” is likely to curl up only on gay and Asian film fest laps.
Title character Pussy (Shaowanasai, in drag), referred to confusingly both as a former GoGo boy and a real girl, is a kickboxing superheroine assigned to infiltrate a drug ring operating out of the house of Madam Pomidoy. Pussy falls for Pompidoy’s son Tang (Krissada Terrence) who turns out to be her long-lost bad brother. Corny story is executed with plenty of winks, but grows tedious. Tech credits, especially sound, are poor. Pic is the latest installment of an ongoing video series made by Shaowanasai, said to have a cult following at home.”
