Ft. short film “The Evangelist” with filmmaker J. Manzo

Parallel Lens launches next year as a film series pairing Austin-based filmmakers with filmmakers from around the world. Its central focus: how filmmakers from different worlds can be in conversation with each other when presented side by side. Tonight is our jumping-off point, a preview of what that conversation can sound like. Remi Weekes, a Black British director, gives us His House, following a South Sudanese couple granted asylum in England whose new home won't let their past stay buried.

J. Manzo, a Mexican filmmaker, gives us The Evangelist, following a Mexican man fleeing a lynching who is sheltered by a woman convinced he is the literal answer to her prayers. Both films land on the same unsettling question: what does it cost to be someone's rescue?

The screening concludes with a Q&A between Nigerian-born filmmaker Chinwe Okorie and J. Manzo on how their backgrounds shape their lens on horror. Chinwe heads into production on her latest short film, Help Is on the Way.
