Black and White Ball!! Dress in black&white baby!
Artist Robert Longo had long had an uneasy relationship with Johnny Mnemonic, his 1995 adaptation of a William Gibson short story. He’d wanted to make a black and white art film. The studio wanted a tentpole blockbuster. The result was a mess, albeit a mess with fun work from Keanu Reeves and Dolph Lundgren. Decades later, Longo and the studio collaborated to put together a revised version of Johnny Mnemonic, this time color corrected to the black and white Longo preferred. Effects that warbled in color strike true in black and white, and Longo’s ruined, hypercorporate future sticks in the mind. It’s a striking presentation that brings out the best side of a sometimes marvelous, sometimes silly movie.
