What does it take to belong in the world? The 1985 cult classic My Beautiful Laundrette touches on the Pakistani immigrant experience in mid-1980s England. At a point of immense cultural change and homefront hostility, an unlikely queer romance buds between Omar, the son of a Pakistani immigrant family (Gordon Warnecke), and Johnny, a neighborhood British punk (Daniel Day Lewis). Through the unfolding of Omar and Johnny’s  testy romance, freedom, expression, politics, and family ties battle it out to carve a new way forward. My Beautiful Laundrette addresses the complexities and contradictions of the immigrant experience through a comedic, politically poignant, and queer lens. Directed by Stephen Frears and with a screenplay by Hanif Kureishi, the film’s screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award, and has been lauded as foundational to queer, British, and post colonial cinema for decades to come.
