The vitals:
7:00 ~ Doors
7:30 ~ TAMPOPO
The wildly diverting tangents of a Monty Python feature. The freewheelin’ spirit (and occasional old-fashioned scene wipes) of Hausu. The training montage chemistry of Little Mac and Doc Louis from Punch-Out. All this plus, as advertised, a visual and aural treatment of making and enjoying food that will rival the best meal of your life. These are the gifts we’ve been given by writer/director Juzo Itami in TAMPOPO, a movie that clearly adores other movies and yet is not beholden to any of their rules. If you’re feeling the least bit jaded about cinema or can’t seem to remember why you fell in love with it in the first place, see this movie.
