Nobuhiko Obayashi could make a solid claim to being one of the greatest visual stylists of the last 50 years of cinema, and his most popular (to western audiences) is a fantastic entrypoint to see why. House (often transliterated as Hausu) follows a group of high school girls as they visit one girls’ aunt in the countryside. What follows is a sometimes-spooky, sometimes-hilarious meditation on archetype, myth, youth, and the horrors of the nuclear bomb. Obayashi himself survived the bombing of Hiroshima and the film (based partly on his daughter’s nightmare) was an attempt to translate pure horror and dream logic into a narrative film. This is the work of an auteur that deserves so much more attention, and this is a great place to start with his works.
