ft. local short film “Cyber Source” with filmmaker Rachel Napolitano
Character actor extraordinaire Bob Balaban brought a film crew to the Austin area in the early ‘90s to make a high school comedy about Johnny Dingle (Andrew Lowery), a teenager who loves Missy (Traci Lind) so much that he’d die for her. And he does! For Johnny, death is just an inconvenience, as he rises from the grave with only two things on his mind: stealing Missy’s heart and eating human flesh.
Underappreciated by critics and overlooked in theaters, My Boyfriend’s Back is the definition of a cult classic, finding an audience in video stores and airing constantly on cable in the ‘90s. Alongside a cast of beloved character actors (Balaban knows his people) like Edward Herrmann, Cloris Leachman, and Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s Edwin Neal, it also gave the world early glimpses of talents like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Matthew McConaughey (as Guy #2!)
Come for a goofy, surprisingly sweet comedy about a rotting corpse with an appetite, stay for some familiar locations as they looked in Bush Sr.’s Lame Duck period! Once My Boyfriend’s Back sinks its teeth into you, you’ll never forget it!
