7:30 ~ "Breaking Silence" short film + panel discussion

BREAKING SILENCE follows Walker and Leslie Estes, a deaf father and CODA daughter from Baton Rouge, LA, who work together upon Leslie’s release from prison—driven by their shared experiences of incarceration and deafness—to help others in their community affected by the prison system.

The documentary short aims to shed light on the criminal justice system’s failings at the handling of disability rights by introducing audiences to a single family that has been affected by the system’s failings. It is an intimate exploration into parenthood, regret, and, ultimately, healing.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with community partners — Texas Appleseed, Coalition of Texans with Disabilities, Art Spark Texas, Cinema Touching Disability, Lioness JIWA, Deaf Television Foundation— film participants, and the filmmaker.
