Being from Coastal Georgia, watching Daughters of the Dust for the first time felt so familiar, the spellbinding landscape almost gave me deja vu. Setting aside, the film’s primary language is un-subtitled Gullah, so it feels like being little and playing quietly at your grandma’s feet while she shares family secrets with your aunts. —Emily Basma
