Part of our SUMMER CAMP series!

It’s easy to pass off anything from the black-and-white Hays Production Code era of cinema as old-timey, dull, and outdated in ideology, but Some Like it Hot is proof that such a theory is entirely incorrect, a shining example of legendary director Billy Wilder’s brilliance even in an age where more bawdy content was routinely suppressed. He had so many classics to his name that it’s hard to call just one his masterpiece, but this certainly makes a strong case for the title, as utterly watchable today as it was in 1959.

It’s a tale as old as time, two jazz musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) flee the scene of a mob hit and have to disguise themselves as women (thankfully there’s an all-woman jazz group to join) to get as far away from their pursuers as possible. Mixups and hijinks ensue as one of our heroes falls for the band’s singer (Marilyn Monroe at the peak of her powers) and the other is pursued by a determined old man (a scene-stealing Joe E. Brown). Will they find love while in disguise? Will they escape certain doom? Will they understand proper bra sizing charts? At least two of these questions will be answered in this daring, timeless, classic comedy that hits every note it plays right down to one of the most legendary final lines in cinema history. —Jackie Stargrove
