Newly divorced YA author Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) has a terrible idea to overcome her writer’s block: she plans to return to her hometown and seduce her old high school flame (who just so happens to be married now with kids).
From writer Diablo Cody (JENNIFER’S BODY) and directed by her right hand man Jason Reitman (JUNO), YOUNG ADULT is a scathing yet empathetic look at a woman going through somewhat of a mid-life crisis. Theron is actually insane in this film, so much so that it’s criminal she wasn’t even nominated for her role as a hot author who comes home to terrorize her small town. YOUNG ADULT is a film that allows its leading woman to be genuinely terrible, and not in a comedic villain sort of way. It’s truly the blueprint for every Ottessa Moshfegh tragic female. —Jenny Nulf
