Kokomo City is a documentary film directed, produced, and edited by D. Smith. Following a successful music career, collaborating with artists like Lil Wayne and Cirara, Smith was iced out of the industry for being transgender and ended up houseless. It was during this difficult time that she envisioned a film centered on sex work, contemplating whether she’d have to turn to it to survive. When she couldn’t get filmmakers interested, she decided to shoot Kokomo City herself, proving her resilience in the face of hardship.
Kokomo City showcases the powerful stories of four Black trans women (Daniella Carter, Dominique Silver, Liyah Mitchell, and the late Koko Da Doll) as they share an unfiltered look into their lived experiences as sex workers in New York and Georgia. The women bravely confront the complexities of race, sexuality, social class, and gender identity throughout the documentary. Smith’s result is a deeply impactful showcase of trans life that resonates powerfully, while rejecting simplistic portrayals of sex work, making it a vital watch for every generation.
