Nadine Franklin (Hailee Steinfeld) is your typical self indulgent high school girl – she feels overshadowed by her popular older brother, tortures her favorite teacher during lunch hours, and hates her mom. At least she has her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) to share all her deep pain with.
That’s until Krista starts dating Nadine’s brother, Darian (Blake Jenner). Suddenly the world according to Nadine comes crashing down around her, and she’s taking it out on anyone who is in her orbit.
Kelly Fremon Craig’s directorial debut THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN is a truly heartwarming piece of work. It’s the kind of film that feels true to its characters, and is unafraid to make its protagonist a little unlikeable along the way. Steinfeld is effortless as Nadine, and Richardson is charming and loveable in her big screen debut. THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN is a John Hughes-esque film for a new generation.
