Three Palestinian men, spanning three generations of refugees expelled from their homes during the Nakba, seek work in the oil fields of Kuwait to provide for their families. To get there, they must navigate the treacherous Iraqi desert and the untrustworthy smugglers who offer their way.

The Dupes, based on Ghassan Kanafani’s novella Men in the Sun (1962), speaks to the profound loss that Palestinians endured during the Nakba — when over 700,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed by Zionist militias to create the modern-day state of Israel. Like the rest of Kanafani’s work, Men in the Sun represents our collective history as Palestinians and weaves together a story in which every generation sees their own experience reflected.

Director Tewfik Saleh once wrote that the ending of The Dupes — which differs from Kanafani’s — does not arouse pity … Engaged art must provoke in the spectator anger in the face of what he sees, a refusal of what he sees.” 53 years after the film’s release, Saleh and Kanafani’s critique of those complacent before Zionism endures and calls us to maintain our commitment to the Palestinian struggle.

Join us in our first event in a weeklong series to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Nakba. A discussion on The Dupes, Kanafani, and how his work continues to shape our understanding of exile and inevitable return will follow the screening.
