Our connected world, bound together by the continuous flow of information through modern technology, is capable of wonderful things. To speak personally, it’s the reason I’ve made incredible friends from all across the world and the reason I’m able to write semi-professionally about the culture that moves and intrigues me. But connection can also create isolation and dissociation. And there are malefactors who’ll take both as convenient excuses. Chaos, mass destruction, murder? If you benefit from them, why not. After all, no one else is real.
Blackhat pits a crew of computer experts and law enforcement officials (Chris Hemsworth, Tang Wei, Viola Davis, Wang Leehom, and Holt McCallany) who give a damn against a hacker (Yorick van Wageningen) who’d ruin the world for the sake of a high score in his head. It’s a thrilling, thoughtful cyberthriller that also boats a striking romance between Hemsworth and Wei and a tremendously satisfying showdown. Michael Mann’s director’s cut opens the film up, giving Davis, Wang, and McCallany more space to shine, and reworks the narrative to spike its scale and stakes.
