Ever since Disney+ came into play Pixar movies have had a bit of confusion on where they should land. Do they go straight to the streaming service or take a chance with a theatrical run? The smaller more intimate Pixar films seem to land on Disney+, while the larger ones that are almost surefire IP hits will go to theaters. But sometimes the ones that land on the streamer are better than their theatre offerings. Turning Red being one of those cases.
Domee Shi’s feature directorial debut made me, a 29 year old man, feel like a 13 year old girl growing up in 2000’s Toronto in the best way possible. It’s funny, a bit off beat, and still found a way to end up with that big Pixar heartstring moment. A killer score from 4*TOWN (the film’s fictional boy band), a Kaiju fight and a cute cuddly red panda? You kinda can’t miss Turning Red.
