After the kid-oriented espionage of Cloak & Dagger (1984), but before Steven Spielberg’s A.I., there was another acronym-titled film about a computer boy: D.A.R.Y.L.
We’ve all wondered if maybe the smartest kid in our class was an android built by the government for war games, haven’t we? Well, Daryl is one such android, but he doesn’t know it and neither do the people who’ve adopted him. When an accident leaves Daryl stranded in a small town with no memory and government goons closing in, it’s up to his new friends to help liberate him from a life of service to the military industrial complex.
Directed by Simon Wincer, who had mostly directed television episodes and orchestrated car chase sequences up until this film, D.A.R.Y.L. is another one of the one of the perilous PG film for kids with all the delightful excitement and endangerment 1980s cinema is known for.
