Wai-Tung is a yuppie living a double life in ’90s New York. By day he plays the part of a dutiful son to his Taiwanese parents, and at night he goes home to his gay Jewish boyfriend Simon. When Wai-Tung’s parents turn up the pressure to marry, Simon hatches a plan—Wai-Tung and his undocumented tenant can have a simple courthouse wedding and solve everybody’s problems. But when Wai-Tung’s parents come to stay with the trio and plan a traditional Chinese wedding banquet, keeping their secrets is not so simple.

For his first American feature, Ang Lee delivers the sentimental version of a screwball comedy. THE WEDDING BANQUET (1993) has hijinks and laughs, but lingers to show the aftermath of shattered plates and misunderstandings. This modern classic recently made history as the first Chinese language movie preserved by the Library of Congress, and is currently being remade with Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang.

This screening is co-presented by Austin Asian American Film Festival (AAAFF), a nonprofit organization that champions Asian and Asian American stories through film and creative media.
