Released in 1975, Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird was the first theatrical outing for the inhabitants of Sesame Street. The film follows Big Bird and his journey back to Sesame Street after a social worker relocates him to Illinois to live with a family of Dodos. After the news breaks the Sesame Street gang goes on a cat and mouse chase to try to find him and bring him back home.
The film covers topics such as loneliness, the meaning of family, and home and teaches audiences that even though these things can be scary, they’re natural and things that you should feel comfortable with. In between its lessons it weaves humor in without ever talking down to audiences of any age. In a time where films seem to think less of their audience, it’s good to know Sesame Street still has respect for its viewer.
