When gay rights activist, AIDS documentarian, and all around badass Maria Maggenti started working on her indie first feature, she realized the most rebellious movie to make in a landscape of buried gays and doomed romances is a queer rom-com full of light and laughter. This movie has everything: tomboys, chosen family, diesel dykes, cohabitating ex-girlfriends, ACT UP memorabilia, Bikini Kill, and Rubyfruit Jungle. Despite its homophobic R rating, THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURES OF TWO GIRLS IN LOVE (1995) is the sweetest piece of romantic fluff you could ever hope to curl up in.
