7:30 ~ TOKYO GODFATHERS
Although he only directed four feature films before his untimely passing in 2010 at the age of only 46, few filmmakers in the modern era have had such a profound and immediate impact on the global cinematic and cultural landscape as Satoshi Kon. Kon’s surrealist, sci-fi, thriller, anime epics like Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress have become cultural touchstones in the two decades since their creation. Additionally, his work has gone on to inspire (or be ripped-off-by depending on your position) Hollywood’s biggest directors, having a huge influence on everyone from Darron Aaronofsky to Christopher Nolan. However, in Kon’s legendary four film run, his penultimate feature, Tokyo Godfathers, tends to be the odd one out.
What Tokyo Godfathers lacks in mind-bending thrills it more than makes up for with gorgeous animation, immense sincerity and heart, and side-busting comedy. The story of three homeless people’s quest to reunite a baby with its parents on Christmas Eve is destined to become your new favorite holiday watch immediately after viewing. Packed to the brim with hijinks, christmas magic, and the most dysfunctionally wonderful found family a baby could ask for, Tokyo Godfathers deserves its place alongside Satoshi Kon’s other masterpieces, and alongside the greatest Christmas movies ever made.
