HIS MOTORBIKE, HER ISLAND is HOUSE director Nobuhiko Obayashi’s romantic exploration of the Japanese youth subculture known as Bōsōzoku (“reckless driving group”). In Obayashi’s film, Ko (Riki Takeuchi) is the reckless cyclist, who goes on a trip to Kawasaki after being threatened by his girlfriend’s brother. In Kawasaki, Ko runs into Miiyo (Kiwako Harada), and after a series of coincidental meet cutes, the two start a romance. However, when Miiyo’s love starts to become entangled with her love of motorbikes, Ko starts to fear that one day she will crash.
If you’ve seen Obayashi’s HOUSE, you’re already familiar with his zany use of color, editing, and graphics that visually entice the viewer, and HIS MOTORBIKE, HER ISLAND has the same sense of visual panache. As romantic as Ko and Miiyo’s relationship is together, their passion for biking is just as powerful. By the end of the film, you will be yearning to go find yourself a motorbike and become the wind as well.
